“The story of that sword strike will remain across all four ages.”

This A3 art poster illustrates one of the most visually arresting and hyperbolic moments in Guru Gobind Singh’s Ballad of Chandi. The Goddess delivers a strike of such monumental power that it transcends the mythic battlefield, piercing through the layers of the physical and cosmological universe.

The Order of the Blow: A Descent Through the Cosmos Following the literal sequence described in the poetry of the Ballad of Chandi, the illustration tracks the blade’s journey as it descends from the heavens:

  1. The Demon (Mahikhāsur): The sword first cuts through the skull and face of the demon, the personification of arrogance and ego.
  2. The Earth: After slicing through the demon and his saddle, the blade smashes through the Earth.
  3. The Bull (Kajuta): The strike travels deeper, going straight through the horns of the mythic bull. This figure, referred to in the book as Kajuta, comes from medieval Islamic and early South Asian cosmology and is identified as the “Bull of righteousness” that supports the world.
  4. The Turtle (Kūrma): Finally, the blade strikes and glistens off the shell of the turtle, an ancient pan asian culture entity that swims through the cosmic void while holding the weight of creation.

This playful blend of Islamic and Indic cosmologies serves as a frame to illustrate the Goddess’s indomitable power and the way a single righteous action resonates throughout the entirety of creation

This work is a core piece of  Visual Kathā The Ballad of Chandi series, utilising a synthesis of sacred poetry and groundbreaking visual graphic commentary.
